Having just returned from an unbelievable week with Deepak Chopra at The Chopra Center in Carlsbad, CA, I am filled with new energies and ideas.  At this seminar, Deepak spoke about the power of the quantum domain (quantum defined as the basic unit of matter or energy; it is from 10,000,000 to 100,000,000 times smaller than the smallest atom) and the power of intention.  Indeed, our intentions are a very powerful force in shaping the course of—not only our own lives—but that of, the entire universe.

The world around us is literally a vibrating field of energy, as are our own human bodies.  In his book, Perfect Health, Deepak explains that:  “You acquire a new stomach lining every 5 days…Your skin is new every 5 weeks.  Your skeleton, seemingly so solid and rigid, is entirely new every three months…You appear to be the same outwardly, yet you are like a building whose bricks are constantly being replaced by new ones.  Every year, fully 98 percent of the total number of atoms in your body are replaced…” (p. 18-19).

All well and good, but what does this have to do with pilates?  What this has to do with pilates is nothing short of miraculous!  If our bodies are naturally rebuilding themselves every day (every second, every moment) why not actively direct that rebuilding process with our intentions and actions?  By focusing our attention on rebuilding our bodies every day through the pilates method of working from a strong core and using the  mind/body connection of strengthening and lengthening our body’s muscles, we are actually helping to create a brand new body for ourselves!  We need to think of our bodies being new every single day!  I often say to my students, that “pilates is a game of millimeters, not inches” but that millimeters create miles of difference over time.  This is such an empowering concept, it cannot be stressed enough.  So, the next time you find yourself in a pilates class, be even MORE mindful.  Don’t just practice pilates, practice “quantum pilates” and know that you truly are creating a strong, flexible and vibrant new you!
